Water mass transformation due to mixed layer entrainment and mesoscale stirring: In series or parallel?

چکیده

The convergence of advective and diffusive buoyancy flux must match the air-sea buoyancy flux between two outcropping isopycnals. This leads to a diagnostic framework for water mass transformation in which a myriad of different processes can be incorporated under a unifying balance. We review how the diapycnal advection due to ubiquitous mixed layer entrainment can be included in this framework, and we estimate its contribution to the large scale transformation. We also consider how decomposing the flow and buoyancy field into mean, eddy and turbulent parts leads to clarifying the interaction of mixed layer and mesoscale (or sub-mesoscale) eddies in the overall large scale balance.

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation

In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...

Mixed-Layer Budget Analysis of the Diurnal Cycle of Entrainment in Southeast Pacific Stratocumulus

Mixed-layer budgets of boundary layer mass, moisture, and liquid water static energy are estimated from 6 days of data collected at 20°S, 85°W (a region of persistent stratocumulus) during the East Pacific Investigation of Climate (EPIC) stratocumulus cruise in 2001. These budgets are used to estimate a mean diurnal cycle of entrainment and, by diagnosing the fluxes of humidity and liquid water...

Coastal Stratocumulus Topped Boundary Layers and the Role of Cloud-top Entrainment

The ability of the U.S. Navy’s Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPSTM) to accurately forecast the height and structure of the Marine Boundary Layer (MBL) in the coastal zone is analyzed and compared to surface and aircraft observations from the Dynamics and Evolution of Coastal Stratus (DECS) field study conducted along the central coast of California from June, 16 to Ju...

Eddy transport as a key component of the Antarctic overturning circulation

The exchange ofwatermasses across theAntarctic continental shelf break regulates the export of dense shelf waters to depth as well as the transport of warm, mid-depth waters towards ice shelves and glacial grounding lines1. The penetration of the warmer mid-depth waters past the shelf break has been implicated in the pronounced loss of ice shelf mass over much of west Antarctica2–4. In high-res...

The 3D Oceanic Mixed Layer Response to Hurricane Gilbert

Upper-ocean heat and mass budgets are examined from three snapshots of data acquired during and after the passage of Hurricane Gilbert in the western Gulf of Mexico. Measurements prior to storm passage indicated a warm core eddy in the region with velocities of O(1) m s21. Based upon conservation of heat and mass, the threedimensional mixed layer processes are quantified from the data. During a...
